Road passenger transport in the late 1800s was provided entirely by horse - be it omnibus, charabanc, hackney carriage or even carrier's cart. Although the Chatham trams started in 1902, Rochester was not served until 1905 and it was 1908 before Strood was connected with tram tracks across the bridge.
Horse buses could not compete against the trams, but neither could the first motor buses!
